Shama Johns Art

I was born in London and began my artistic journey early, starting still-life watercolour lessons at 14. Those early days really shaped how I work today, especially when I moved into oil painting. I studied artist such as Cezanne and Matisse, whose work inspires me to this day. My style has developed into something almost illustrative, focusing on capturing everyday objects. I love playing with light and shadow, paying close attention to the details, to bring a sense of life and nostalgia to the ordinary moments we often overlook.

“Tales from London's Dinner Tables"

Past Exhibition

November, 2023

Venue
Renegade Bar, Bethnal Green, London

In November 2023, I curated a solo exhibition featuring 30 of my original oil paintings, each reflecting my unique artistic vision. This body of work highlighted my exploration of London's vibrant culinary culture through a contemporary lens. The exhibition showcased my ability to blend traditional still life techniques with modern, abstract forms, creating a striking contrast of colors and textures. My focus on light and shadow brought each piece to life, drawing viewers into the scenes I portrayed. This exhibition marked a significant milestone in my career, solidifying my place in the contemporary art scene.

Artist Residency, February 2024, La Maison De Beaumont, South of France

During my month-long artist residency at La Maison de Beaumont in the South of France, I immersed myself in the beautiful surroundings of Beaumont to deeply focus on my painting skills. This residency provided the perfect environment for me to explore and refine my techniques, especially in oil painting. The peaceful setting and uninterrupted time allowed me to experiment with colour, texture, and form, elevating my artistic practice.
